I'm just wondering if we could possibly hold a Osu! comp.
It's a freeware rhythm game but use your mouse instead of arrow keys.
The game does have a multiplayer, but its online and from what i can see you can't make dedicated servers for it. However, from what I heard you don't need to use so much internet to run multiplayer, so it could be a possibility?
It's allot of fun and i'm sure that i know that there will be at least some people at respawn who have played it and would be interested.

You will have more of a chance of getting it in if you can provide an approximate amount of net usage it goes through.

ok, i got an estimation of how much net is used and it's <3kb/s per player if everybody has the same beatmaps.

If someone hasn't got the beat map, it ranges from 8mb (no video), 20mb (with video) and 80mb (with hd video) and you can download the beatmap through the game (but it'll be less of a hassle if people download the beatmaps before respawn or grab it off someone at the venue.)

Because the online service is public, you'd probly need to enable a password, so randoms don't enter.

Whilst it sounds promising, given we only have a 768kbit link to the internet. And steam tends to chew through that like a dog with a bone... it's highly unlikely if its a game that must make use of net servers.

Does it have a dedicated option? If it has a dedicated build option, we could ever so nicely ask mr squidness if he could build you one? or host one?

unfortunately i don't think they have dedicated servers. We can probably look back to it when the net isn't so much of an issue perhaps?

I agree with this idea. osu! is an awesome game that would be excelent fun.
If we can work out how it connects to the server and if it needs to connect to a central server or if you can choose your own then we might have a better chance of getting a LAN server working.

The older versions of osu! i heard it had a LAN option.
But Peppy stopped it because of increasing of internet multiplayer popularity. A crack possibly could work so you can work it by IP, but it's most likely forbidden by terms and conditions of installing the software... unsure.gif At least it's freeware, so it could be a posibillity.

I have a list of 10 songs that have a good beatmaps (ones that are easy to pick up and have a decent variation of difficulties)
It would be a good idea to start off with easy ones then move on to harder maps as the tournament progresses.
especially since they might be allot of new players entering the comps, and nobody at respawn knows how good everybody is at the game.

Ok found the post in the forums that regarding LAN compatibility.

When I started making osu!, this was a high priority feature. I lanned a lot with friends. This no longer happens. I don't know if this is worldwide, but gaming has moved to the internet. I know the benefits of having lan support, but it's not a simple move and requires either a local implementation of Bancho, or huge netcode changes.

If this helps at all.

Reading that suggests it requires continuous internet access. Which isn't a good sign. Can you tell us its bandwidth requirements (how much it needs to work/operate?) or is it like steam and only needs to authenticate and works after that without the need of the net?

To quote SirSquid, it's a "mayhaps" depending on what it'll need.

Unfortunatly it requires a constant stream. and it needs the max of 3kb/sec per player. sad.gif
