Respawn LAN Forums _ General Stuff _ Travelling

Posted by: SirSquidness Oct 5 2008, 03:03 PM

z0mg! First post! lolololol! HAI!

*ahem*

I'm just curious, how many people does Respawn get travelling from more than, say, half an hour away? Do you get many from regional cities (eg, Bendigo!) Perhaps any bus loads, or people using public transport to carry their PCs there?

If you were to travel two hours to a LAN, any advice? I have car. Will drive if I have someone to share petrol money with tongue.gif

I myself live in Bendigo. I'm an admin for a 40+ person LAN up here [invite only, sorry folks wink.gif ]. I'm wanting to head down to Melbourne with a few mates for a nice big LAN, so far Respawn looks like the best option. Your answers wont have a bearing on my choices I'm just curious. wink.gif

I live 45 mins away, not too much of an issue. We had a couple of guys from fragfest in sydney at the respawn just passed, that was pretty cool. (Dunno if they drove or flew down but)

pretty big trip for a lan

Posted by: SirSquidness Oct 5 2008, 05:55 PM

See, the beauty of driving with a few mates to a LAN over that distance is the whole road trip thing that goes with it. 1.5 to 2 hours (Not entirely sure how long it is to get to Respawn from my place. I believe somewhere around there) isn't really a road trip, more an afternoon outing.

But I've known quite a few people who've done the same thing. And when I actually have a decent income and can afford to drive/fly to other major cities for awesome LANs, I will happy.gif

In fact, I was at a tiny LAN in the middle of no where at the start of the year where one of the guys flew from Sydney to come. Disassembled his PC (that he hadn't touched in yonks, he's a mac man these days), put all the bits in static bags in his suit case, flew down, and set it up on a cardboard box for the duration of the LAN. So much win. So much potential to spill coke/energy drinks...

Im a little over an hour away with eastlink. A few mates of mine came down from ballarat for V8. They owed me... I went up there a few months ago for a lan.... 3 hours driving... mmm fun!

Posted by: beeslol Oct 27 2008, 04:27 PM

I used to live 2 hours drive east of Melbourne in the valley, and I still made my way to city lans.
It's easy if you plan your stops out to give you a chance to stretch your legs and get food.

It is good to get a few people together though with a big enough vehicle to support the job.

Mad props to that Sydney dude who packed and flew with his PC in suitcases.

When I was involved with the AGDC event in 2003, we had a PC courier ship our game server and personal PCs up there. I also believe that one of our admins once flew with a PC placed in a suitcase but it ended up in bad shape after the trip home.

i live about 30-45 mins away.

Hi all

Hmm....the Sydney guys would have to take the cake.

I Regularly drive from Mildura, about a 7 hour trip. Generally do it straight, sometimes take a break in Bendigo.

Pulling all nighters at the LAN and then driving back home is a pain, but its gotta be done biggrin.gif

Cheers

Heya,

As oohms pointed out, we've had interstaters before. We've definitely had some people come from regional Victoria so please do come! We're looking at expanding our capacity a little as well so this shall be, without a doubt, the biggest Respawn LAN event we've ever run.

Miss out on it at your own risk smile.gif

How much are you expecting zardoz?

Posted by: Zardoz Dec 28 2008, 10:51 PM

Over 350. We can do it, it'll just be a bit tight.

Back in the Shafted LAN days, that venue held over 450 players but the admin area was on the balcony, there was no stage and PCs used a lot less power back then.

Posted by: neon Dec 29 2008, 02:22 PM

put the admin area on the stage to make more room? i guess at the end of the day, you wouldnt really make up a whole lot of space doing that. 350 is huge anyway, any extra players can be shoved in the annex like last time, but i think the rego's should stay at 350. Considering there are 382 registered, you should get about what, 330-340 confirmed?

Posted by: R4N Dec 29 2008, 05:56 PM

i doubt the stage could even hold the admins... tongue.gif
330-350 confirmed i would expect
however by the look of respawns past... we may hit the cap and then some this event

Posted by: devil Jan 4 2009, 10:24 AM

i lived in portland for awhile and never missed one,

i travel to lan in Shepparton sometimes,

I have also done a goldcoast lan and one in tassie.

thinking of going to that sydney one that get about 300 people. but it is the tooo close to respawn.

I now live in Mount Eliza and it is about 1 hour away from the respawn, but it dont matter me (i even go home for sleep)

Posted by: devil Jan 4 2009, 10:26 AM

neon you have to remember there are a couple of other lans on at the same weekend as the next respawn, but i dont think they will lower the player limit of respawn

Posted by: Tank Jan 4 2009, 01:09 PM

Regos do hit the cap at 350. it may seemt hat we have 420 "registered" but thats just 350 + 70 on a waiting list. this all changes and gets muddled when confirmations happen.

As check-in bitch; CONFIRM. for your own sake! don't give in to a haphazard chance that 70 people will forget about the event. better to be safe than sorry!

Also when we talk player limits, size is only one of the variables. There are other issues like Power and safety and such things smile.gif

pretty big trip for a lan

I'm going to play my 2600km each way trip to melbourne for 2 lans 4ish years ago(hit shafted and another one then drove back 2 days later)
(don't live in Alice Springs(also don't do Alice to Melbourne in 2 days))

We (the crazy Alice Springs people) also did 3 group trips up to the DGA anzac day lan in Darwin though that was only 1500kms each way

So much happier now i only have to travel from Footscray

Power... Bring more people. I'll bring my UPS. Problem solved (for me)!
Hell, I'll be generous. I'll bring an extension lead and run my PC from the toilets!

And safety... Hell, it's a LAN. There's enough biohazards in there to kill a small african nation. 'sif we need to worry about safety tongue.gif

(On a more serious note, I do completely realise why there's limits =) )

Posted by: Fearsome Visage Jan 8 2009, 11:41 PM

I'm also traveling from mildura. I've only got a laptop so no huge hassle getting down with it.

Wow. Just wow.

I shall not complain at all about driving a bluebird station wagon down from Bendigo with [possibly] four people, who all use LCDs and average sized cases (except for my Antec P182 - that seems to dwarf most standard ATX cases. Maybe it's just 'cos it's so freaking heavy that it becomes a psych thing...)

Said car gets filled when I got to teh LAN I run, but that's cos I take like... everything in my room. Four PCs (three servers - one of em's a freaking huge old HP storage server), three monitors, craploads of cables, prizes, projector screen, etc. Should hopefully be fine with the LAN gear for this LAN.

Posted by: Shady Jan 15 2009, 04:37 PM

I remember we went to a Shafted with 5 guys in 1 sedan, everyones PCs in that sedan and this was in the days of CRTs (with a couple of 21" behemoths) and I tell ya what, I was in the front passenger seat luckily enough, but it was no advantage to sitting in the back, had monitor under my feet, case in lap, seat all the way forward (so lucky I was so much younger back then) lol... and yeah fun times, we spent like 2-3 days lanning it up at mates house prior to the lan (hardcore CS comps back then..) SoG among others need you to be in the zone on the day biggrin.gif

But yeah remember its the long school holidays guys, so there'll be plenty of sore ears during and afterwards and probably why the cap might be reached and passed!

Hope theres enough room, just something about last respawn that was annoying. The space between tables was too little in some areas, even sitting in as close to the desk as possible people couldnt get through behind you and the guy sitting behind ya, without at least one of yous having to move quite a bit (which is very disturbing during game) not all of us are pencil thin nerds. Some of us have the extra padding required to not have to bring a pillow lol..

3 full towers 1x 19", 1x 17" crt, 2 lcds. plus bags. i might say that im quite good at tetris also.

Posted by: SirSquidness Jan 16 2009, 04:51 PM

Looks like I wont be having much trouble now. Half the coming have bailed (bah. so typical), so there'll only be two or three people/towers in my car.

At least I'll have 400 other people to entertain me at the LAN tongue.gif
