So I saw some people complaining about music over the PA... I have a half decent & very fun solution ?
How about a live broadcast of DJ'ing scheduled at specific parts of the LAN ? It could be fun and gives people a chance to request song's and all that kind of shiz, and the best part is it's totally optional and can easily run in the background while you're leeching instead of gaming.
I broadcast over vent & through other programs all the time, using programs & proper hardware, & I DJ for a living so am very keen to put this proposal to good use. Happy to bring in the equipment or just do it with the programs.
I was actually going to try it out this LAN (Hence why I was asking you those Q's Squid) but I couldn't figure out how to run two instances of Teamspeak or Mumble so was unsuccessful, but if I can figure out that hitch, it will be a sinch to broadcast through those 2 programs. Although, vent is much easier
So advantages to this:
- Fun, listen to some good music or request your own.
- Optional music
- Properly mixed
- Runs smoothly in the background and does not disturb other's who do not want music
- Easily request the track name and leech it off the DJ (If he's feeling generous )
What do you guys reckon ?
Your proposal has some merit, except for this one thing
Ha the word leech is cringe worthy indeed, but we all do a little bit of it when we LAN
Yeah, we do.. but I managed to get my friends all into CoD4 comp this time! Although we didn't do too well, it made pretty much all of them say "f*** filesharing, next time I'm coming back for the comps!"
It was really good to hear, since I come mostly for the gaming anyway. It's just a shame that outside of the comps the game servers are pretty quiet..
I think i'm putting all of this in the wrong thread..
As for the music idea, although I usually have iTunes running for most of the time (excluding comp times) I still think that it could be fun for alot of people. I think even I would tune in, just to listen to some stuff that I don't usually hear. Requests could be a bit of a pain, but I guess, really, it's one place where you can easily get hold of a requested song if it isn't already in your playlist
I'm all for the idea! And saying that, I take back the smartarse comments about just quad-clicking TS for two instances
Stream would be the only viable option. Some people aren't going to like that type of music and not all headphones can cancel out loud music.
play games, not leech <3
I'm all for streaming DJ type stuff. How will you be taking requests though? Chat in teamspeak? I reckon IRC would be good for that too.
another idea is to have a few different streams of music running, for different genres... so a chillax-y one, rock, pop, trance/club whatever its called) and whatnot. then people could chose what they want to listen to over their headphones...
i dunno :S
Requests can be made just by DC++ or if TeamSpeak or Mumble have some type of chat system like Vent does, that can be used
And Tank your idea is great too. Have different channels streaming different music & have a channel for me doing live mixing & taking requests Although most people just have their own iTunes so unless they are looking to hear something different won't be much of a hit
I love the idea of different channels of music. =D
I'd upload files of silence.
Maybe zardoz can suck up to his contacts and get us some better tubes.... since there is phone lines going into the hall that are pstn though i dont know how crap the conditions are lol
get an internode adsl2+ service provisioned and use their free unmetered streams lol
oohms worked out a way
doesn't latrobe have the microwave link to melbourne uni like the rest of the unis? xD but anyways, getting access to that stuff is hard.
Hi,
1. ADSL2 is so unfeasible it's just not funny. 5KM of copper.. and then getting permission to get it installed... then finding an ISP (which, incidentally, is perhaps easily done in this case)....
2. 3G services are very expensive and we'd required a dedicated link for this that isn't shared by gaming or media streaming.
3. Re: La Trobe, we do get access to this link however this is delivered via a single 768Kbit/sec connection. This is at the very least half the speed of most peoples' broadband and it needs to supply the entire venue with Steam authentication. There's no system that currently allows us to get more bandwidth through this service although as soon as there is - and if it's sensibly priced, then we'll be able to do things (hint: Universities get free peering with Internode anyway but the University needs to be able to distinguish between free and paid traffic so they can on-bill this saving to us which they cannot currently do).
Could do this using SHOUTCast (it's easy to set up) and a DJ Panel. DJ Panel allows requests to be submitted vie a web interface. You can tune in via windows media player, winamp, iTunes or a flash based player on a web page.
It's super easy to set up. I've got all the files on my HDD so I can probably set it up if someone reminds me.
why don't u just put a list where players can write down a song and people can play it like how people ring a radio station and request songs allow the players to request songs and if the admins don't have it ask the player them selves who requested the song see if they have it if they do transfer it to the admins. that way people will get a wide range of music and no on can really complain cause then they can choice a song them selves
People could just listen to whatever they want to on their headphones.
The venue is noisy enough as it is, dont need to add to it with music that will always be too loud or drowned out by the noise in the room.
Back in the days when there was background music at respawn it was awesome
But it is just that, background music... stuff like elevator music or generic trance/electronica at low volumes to give some ambience
richard cheese!
Alternativly, leach my metal folder, place into winamp, ???, profit.
Hmmm so we are going to need a DJ with a CD Player and a crapload of cds... If everyone brings one CD then we should be right for the weekend, even if there are double ups
I choose to bring my Hanson CD
I'd much rather the relaxing sounds of some World/instrumental music like we had at the last lan.
As long as there is no retarded commentating (THIS should have been streamed ffs) or ridiculously not funny/repetitive youtube garbage filling the hall at 2am in the morning, i'm all for it.
If anything you should just bring a radio with an output you can plug into the PA system and put it on a decent radio station. I personally quite like the ABC digitial radio station (No ads or wanky disk jockeys and mostly tolerable music.) If you wanted to bring in a dicky little digital TV tuner, some bunny ears and some AV/patch leads you would have something up and running in minutes with minimal mucking about and maintainance, with music that would cater to most tastes.
As for loudness, as long as it is just below the ambient noise of the hall, it should be tolerated by all?
Triple J allllll night long :3
There is an antenna socket in the hall.. thats how we have done the TV streaming in the past - but i think its just the same as playing mp3's - everyone will have an opinion about it one way or another
Simple, radio, vote on the intranet forums every hour or so for what station
John Cage - 4'33
If people want to listen to music they should do it on thier headphones.
I know I don't want to listen to random ass crappy music over the entire hall.
Half the time it's already hard enough to hear in games with general human noise, let alone with music as well... especially crap like Muse, which I think I remember hearing last LAN.
I think to be honest it's something I've suggested that we feed the PA into a shoutcast server. This way people in official games etc, can still hear announcements. SirSquid and his band of merry men wrote the Respawn Announcer tool to try and help out too.
Reading this thread lets summarize:
1. People wont like others music
2. Sillyheads will pre-queue deliberately irritating music (even hanson got mentioned)
3. People will complain its too loud/too soft
Long and the short of it, Respawn is between a rock and a hard place!
Think Vetinari
quiet all of you..
otherwise we're looping this for the entire event
