Well, my gaming rig of 3 years malfunctioned on Tuesday of this week. The end result is no POST or beep codes. Evidence suggests that it is the CPU since it had locked up on the screensaver; at the very least the motherboard was working as the video card was still working. Honestly, that is speculation, though. ...So, I am back to my original computer Specs: Gigabyte GA586TX motherboard Intel Pentium Pro 200 with MMX 256mb SDRAM "Plus Power" 200 watt PSU 40GB IDE Seagate something (run via PCI-IDE adapter card for 48bit LBA support) S3 Trio64 2mb 2d accelerated VGA Dualboot OS/2 and Windows 98 SE. Pic (my apologies for the very bad quality) New machine in the future will based around intel Q6600/8400. Cheers

Ok. I have done some initial scoping for the specs of a new machine: CPU: Intel i5 760 (2.8GHz, 4 core) MB: Asus P7P55-LX RAM: 4GB Kit 1600 Kingston VGA: ATI 5750 PSU: Thermaltake Evo Blue thing 550W Total cost: $768 from MSY. If this screams midrange - that's because it is. However, it is probably safe to say it is more than twice as powerful as my last machine. According to PassMark* website, at least. (*I find it amusing that the nVidia 7300 LE is about as powerful as the nVidia GeForce4 440 MX. ) Cheers

My only suggestions is to change powersupplies. Look out for something which is 80 Plus certified, like a Seasonic or a Corsair.

I've settled on an Antec TP-550 with Bronze level 80 Plus certification (~81% efficiency at full, 50% and idle loads). For those who are interested, the TermalTake Evo Blue was rated at max 75%. The Antec is cheaper and more efficient.
Thanks for bring that to my attention.
Cheers

Parts cost: $640 or so Reason: My PC was drinking alot of juice with its 4890 and Q6600 (like at least 180w idle, shitloads more load). I built this PC with components that would idle at very low wattages (16-18w CPU, 26-30w GPU), yet still be powerful enough for all the games i play. So far, it has done very well on both counts. I also wanted a tiny light PC for lans
